Supreme Court directed the Centre to ensure food, water, beds & medication in shelters for migrant workers

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre to ensure food, water, beds, medication and counselling in shelters for migrant workers. The apex court has ordered the Centre to create a web portal on immediate basis so as to answer the queries regarding covid-19  in authentic way and to initiate action against people spreading fake news.

The hearing was conducted through videoconferencing.

The bench, comprising Justice Nageshwar Rao and Chief Justice SA Bobde ,  will now hear the case on 7 April.

The apex court on had asked the Centre to file a status report on steps which have been taken so as to tackle the large scale movement of migrant workers across the nation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for the Centre said “Home secretary said, as of 11 am today, nobody is on the road. They have been taken to the nearest available shelter. I am making this statement on record,”

Mehta also updated that  the government is  ensuring that the  food packets are provided to homeless daily workers. Religious trusts ,   railway caterers, Mid-day meal kitchens, and corporates have been being involved so as to take care of the food arrangements.
